Nissan's versatile three-row midsized SUV, the Pathfinder, is going strong in the midst of its fourth generation. This seven-seater is back for 2020 with the same hefty towing capability (6,000 pounds, to be exact) and other sought-after qualities at an affordable price. It comes in four main trim levels - S, SV, SL, and Platinum - although the SV and SL both come in special Rock Creek Editions that add some more standard features plus blacked-out styling elements and unique badging. Under the hood of every 2020 Nissan Pathfinder is a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 284 horsepower and 259 pounds-feet of torque. Its powertrain partner is a continuously variable transmission (CVT); front-wheel drive is standard, but four-wheel drive is available.

Comfort and Convenience

The S comes with roof rails, a rear spoiler, power side mirrors with turn-signal indicators, remote keyless entry, push-button ignition, tri-zone automatic climate control, a sunglasses holder, and an EZ Flex seating system with a second-row 60/40-split fold-flat bench seat and a third-row 50/50-split fold-flat reclining bench seat. Buyers of the SV will also get fog lights, automatic headlights, Nissan Intelligent Key with remote start, a power-adjustable driver's seat, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Black roof rails, a tow hitch receiver with a 7-pin wiring harness, splash guards, faux-leather seating for the first and second rows, and high-contrast interior stitching are all optional, although with the SV Rock Creek Edition, they are standard.

For the SL trim, those previously mentioned features remain optional, although it trades imitation leather for the real thing (if you opt for the SL Rock Creek Edition, those features, including the genuine leather seating, will be standard). It also gets LED headlights, heated side mirrors, a motion-activated liftgate, welcome lighting, memory functions for the driver's seat and side mirrors, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, heated first and second-row seats, and a heated steering wheel. The top-rung Platinum receives a sunroof, power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with memory, and ventilated first- and second-row seats.

Safety and Technology

Each of the 2020 Pathfinder trims comes with the Nissan Safety Shield 360 system of driver-assist technologies, although some of its features are reserved for higher-level trims. The S starts with automatic emergency braking, a rearview monitor, and a rear sonar system. The SV adds blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and intelligent cruise control, while the SL and Platinum get Nissan's intelligent around-view monitor to complete the full slate of technologies.

Both the S and SV supply an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, satellite and HD radio, Bluetooth, six USB ports, and a six-speaker audio system. The SL adds integrated navigation, while the Platinum provides a premium thirteen-speaker Bose audio system. The Platinum is also the only trim that's eligible for the available tri-zone entertainment system with dual 8-inch monitors, remote controls, two wireless headphones, and a rear HDMI input and USB port for video playback.
