The 2020 Nissan Kicks is a solid choice for those looking to make the switch from subcompact sedan to subcompact crossover or just downsize in general. Vehicles like this work out great for city dwellers and anyone else who needs to transport stuff but doesn't want the excessive size and lower efficiency of a big SUV. Although the Nissan Kicks slots into the smallest utility vehicle category, it's actually quite spacious and beats out some of its closest rivals in categories that matter a lot to today's buyers. Plus, its efficient powertrain achieves excellent fuel economy, and all trims get from a wealth of standard equipment, which includes state-of-the-art active driver aids. That, coupled with an already low price tag, translates to excellent value all around.

Trims and Features

Buyers have a choice of three trim levels of the 2020 Nissan Kicks: the S, SV, or SR trim levels. All models are front-wheel drive and have an efficient and sufficient 122 hp 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine paired to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). This five-passenger "cute ute" gets an EPA-estimated 31 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, which puts it in the neighborhood of some hybrid vehicles.

The base S is a no-nonsense but complete version that includes automatic headlights, push-button start, a backup camera, and a 60/40 split-folding second-row seat for more versatility in carrying cargo. The SV adds heated side mirrors, roof rails, automatic climate control, under-seat heat ducts for the second-row passengers, Nissan Intelligent Key, remote start, and a cargo area cover to keep your goods out of sight. The SR is loaded with LED headlights, fog lights, turn-signal indicators on the side mirrors, a rear roof spoiler, sport cloth seat trim with orange accents and stitching, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Heated front seats and Prima-Tex upholstery with orange stitching are optional for this trim.

Tech and Safety

Each of the 2020 Nissan Kicks trims comes with the Nissan Safety Shield 360 suite of driver-assist features. This consists of automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, rear automatic braking, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, high beam assist, and a rear sonar system. The SV gets from intelligent driver alertness, while the SR yields an intelligent around-view monitor, an integrated dynamics-control module, active ride control, and intelligent trace control.

The S receives a nice slate of technology, which includes an infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth hands-free and audio streaming, a six-speaker audio system, three USB data ports, and an auxiliary audio input jack. The SV and SR are upgraded with an advanced 7-inch infotainment touchscreen with Drive-Assist, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and satellite radio. At the top of the heap, the SR can be outfitted with a premium eight-speaker Bose Personal Plus audio system complete with integrated driver's-seat headrest speakers.
